Yoshi Quilt #2

Image
I made this quilt before, based on a grid picture I found online. For this quilt, I used up fabric I had in my stash, which is why the border squares around yoshi  are dark green (Instead of the classic black). I did not have enough silver or  yellow fabric for the background, and now there is a striped background. The squares cut for this quilt were 2 1/4”, and the final size is 96 cm by 127 cm (38“ by 50“). If I do this one again, I cut it even smaller, which I have probably had done in my first version . Like then, I quilted the dark border squares a wiggly line and every second row in the striped background. With the larger size, this left the fabric around the face a bit lose, but I did not want to start quilting in the face. Finished with a silver binding. The background is a mish-mash of donated and stash fabric.

Plus positive quilt

This quilt was based on this free tutorial and made up with a fairytale themed jelly roll. Instead of using white solids as the contrast as I first had planned, I found a solid dark navy at a project Linus meeting. The cutting process is pretty intense, so is the arranging of the rows. Once the first few liens are there it gets easier. The pattern I used is made with  2 1/2“ strips. The finished size was 95 cm by 110 cm (37“ by 43“). Next time, I might add a couple more rows to make the quilt a bit longer. The tutorial can be used for any size strip, I might try 3.5” next, which is nice for fabrice with larger patterns. The backing fabric was from my stash. Due to the contrast in colour on the quilt top I came up with a quilting pattern that did not cross from dark to light fabric. The result is a pretty geometric pattern on the back, look like honey combs almost. Finished it with a navy binding. I absolutely adore the quilt, it is looking fresh and modern.

Little red riding hood granny square quilt

This quilt was made up based on this free tutorial . I used 12 strips of a fairy tale themed jelly roll with white background fabric to create the granny square quilt. I love how the blocks come together, it’s a great project if you only have some time here and there.  To get the size requirements right, I only made 12 blocks. Each block is 9“ before sewing and 8.5“ after sewing. I used 3“ strips (finished width 2 1/2“) in between squares. I used a donated fabric From Project Linus for the backing and a cherry red binding. I quilted around the blocks as well as a smaller square inside the block. Final size is  90cm by 118 cm (36“ by 46“).

Cloud and rain quilt

Not sure how a came across this free pattern , but once I saw it, I could not get it out of my head. Rainy weather doesn't have to be dull.  I thought I need to go shopping for some fabric to make the quilt, but then I found a light blue checkered ababy crib flat sheet that we haven’t really used. With some unicorn and hot air Balloon quilting fabrics for the cloud and matching solid colour strips for the rain, there was no need to buy new fabric!  The pattern is really easy to make up, and I love the result, it's so cute. The quilt was finished with a bright green border. Final size is 96cm by 115cm (38in by 45in).  This quilt was donated to Project Linus Queensland chapter.

Stoplight quilt

With the remainder of the jelly roll used for this quilt with the addition of some solid fabrics, I made a stoplight quilt. The PDF of this free pattern can be downloaded  here . I’ve sewn up a total of 30 blocks, arranged in 5 rows and 6 columns. The final dimension of the quilt is 92cm by 126cm (36 inch by 50inch).  I used some funny pug fabric and some leftover blocks from the diamond quilt for the back. Finished the quilt with a bright cherry red binding. This quilt was Donated to Project Linus QLD chapter. Hope it will find a new happy owner.

Diamond quilt

During the first stages of Covid-19, I turned back to sewing. Through a sewing meet-up, I got made aware of Project Linus, a volunteering Organisation that provides quilts for children in hospitals or in need.  For my first couple of quilts, I wanted to use jelly rolls (pre-cut strips), as I didn’t have a big Fabric stash at hand. I searched for free jelly roll patterns and went with this tutorial first. Three 2.5“ strips are sewn together, cut into squares then combined with a solid colour fabric. Due to COVID-19, my local fabric store was out of white plain fabric, so I used a silver colourway instead. I had several sessions with my 7yo son until we agreed on a way to arrange the blocks! I wanted wavy or stripey (the tutorial shows several ways of arranging the block), he was set on diamond shapes. The compromise was a diamond with stripes around. Final size is 100cm by 126cm (40x50 inches). The backing was made from stash fabric with a peace sign and woodland animals. I finishe...
