Icy poles and hearts

Image
What better way of finishing off some more stash fabric than foundation piecing. I used this pattern before, when I sewed up this tote bag  for a friend. The icy poles are too cute, so I thought I do those and combine them with some solid patches. These patches ended up having little heart in it. Anyway. Foundation Piecing…forgot how messy and wasteful it can be. It was a big act of Labour, and not always enjoyable. Will I do it on that scale again? Rather not, the tote bag was the perfect project size for this pattern!  I used the same solid colours for the backing with the Aqua as the binding. Simple rectangular quilting in the ditch. Final dimensions 87cm x 115 cm (34” by 45”). Donated to project Linus QLD chapter in November 2021.

Rainbow quilt

Image
The ultimate scrap quilt! Inspired by  this quilt’s  pattern and leftover fabric from multiple quilts, I created this rainbow quilt. I cut 2 1/2 by 7 1/2 inch strips, which my 8 yo arranged during a snap lockdown as an art assignment. I am very happy with the result, it’s nice to see these scraps come to shine as a rainbow. I used the multiple zigzag stitch with different colored yarns along the rows. Final size 35“ by 44“ (90 cm  by 110cm). Donated to project Linus QLD chapter in November 2021.

Garden under the sea

Image
For this quilt I followed the snowball fight quilt , which I used before . The fabrics were some assorted animal prints, some under water themed, and some more garden inspired (flowers and bees). They were tied together with the solid colour, a dark petrol. The background was a mix of solid navy and some puppies. The quilting lines followed the inside of the octagons. Finished size 88x123 cm (35“x48“). Donated to project Linus QLD chapter in November 2021.

Little red riding hood

Image
The little red riding hood jelly roll was already used in these two quilts: #1  and #2 . But there were still full strips and some scraps left. I found  this tutorial  and got inspired. The roll had still some red, pinks and greens left as well as the lighter strips. I was just short of a few, which i filled in with solid white and some scraps from another jelly roll. This quilt is quick to make. It was super fun arranging the colours and I could not be happier with the result. It must be my favourite make so far! Finished size100x128cm (40“x50“). Donated to project Linus QLD chapter in November 2021. The backing was a mix of black/grey/white and a rainbow. I did not heavily  quilt it - I went along the center lines of the light strips. This quilt is yet to find a new home.

Modern retro

Image
From the leftover fabrics of this quilt  and with the tried and tested  pattern  from  this quilt , I made this gem. This time, I went for 1-4-4-4 pieces of different fabrics instead of the 1-4-8 that is used before. This gave me more flexibility when trying to get the most out of the scraps. I love how this quilt looks retro and modern at the same time. Now, usually I am not showing the full backing. But this one I just had to. Again, trying to make most of leftover fabrics, I made this green meadow. It makes me so happy - flowers in the front, meadow in the back. In terms of quilting, I tried a new technique from the   original tutorial   I used a multi-zigzag about 1inch apart. This makes the top less blocky and worked perfectly for this quilt. Finished size 88x114 cm (35“x45“). I intended to donate the quilt to Project Linus, but at the final meeting for the year, the lovely ladies talked me into giving it to my work colleague who just ha...

Snowball quilt

Image
I loved making the plus positive quilts ( #1 and #2 ). From the same webpage came this tutorial for the “ snowball fight quilt ”. The original had Christmas themed fabrics. I found some floral fat quarters in my stash, that I had for a while and did not like that much anymore. And now... I LOVE them, they were working perfectly for this pattern, the white patches and binding bring the quilt together. The Pattern was adjusted from 9” squares with 3” contrast fabric to 7.5” squares with 2.5” contrast fabric. The backing was donated fabric from Project Linus. Final size 88x121 cm (35”x48”). The quilt was donated to Project Linus in May 2021.

Rainbow wrap up

Image
This is a wrap! Four rainbow quilts, now I give the pattern a break. I can’t decide on a favourite, as they all have their pluses and minuses. Let’s talk only positives here: #1  bottom right - COVID quilt, I had to made do with what I had. Simple but beautiful colour palette #2  top right - love the turquoise cloud on the white background. Full rainbow #3  top left - the dark navy background makes the colours of the rainbow (and white of the cloud) pop #4  bottom left - the grey and pink combination is nice. And the rainbow binding is the best

Rainbow quilt take #4

Image
The fourth take on this pattern  (see a gallery of all four quilts  here ). I had the rainbow coloured fat quarters left over from the previous rainbow quilt and some silver solid fabric. I used dark pink and light pink for the clouds, which really worked well with the grey background. Pink clouds on a rainy day, wouldn’t that be nice? My favorite thing with this quilt is the rainbow binding. That’s what happens when you don’t have enough fabric in one colour. The quilt was dontated to Project Linus in May 2021.

Rainbow quilt take #3

Image
This is the third take on this pattern  (see a gallery of all four quilts  here ) I ordered the dark navy online. It was a bit too dark for my taste, but then it made the colours pop so nicely! The quilt was donated to Project Linus in May 2021.

Plus positive - take 2

Image
A lot of second takes lately. I loved this quilt so much, that I made another some for another baby girl due to arrive soon. I used a lighter navy for the background  and a jelly roll with some adventure theme/Mexican pattern in a salmon/light green colour way.  For the background, I found a nice aqua Australiana print with bilbies, which is very fitting at this time of year (Australian Easter billy).

Rainbow quilt take 2

Image
After creating this quilt here , I re-visited the pattern, this time with planned out fabrics. The quilt was made for the new baby of a friend. I went with a white background fabric this time and a proper 7 colour rainbow! Thanks to a solid colour fat quarter pack, I had those at hand. The cloud is made up of three different fabrics. The backing is a lovely Australians print (kookaburras!), which hopefully makes my friend’s new arrival feel right at home.
